If you are following publications on our blog, you have surely read about Business Intelligence tools and their impact on the web development team’s workflow especially when you combine BI apps with regular Project Management platforms like Jira and Confluence.

Connecting Jira and Confluence to BI tools like Tableau is not an issue either. You can do it with the help of cutting-edge technologies.

1) Tableau Connector for Jira by Alpha Serve
2) Tableau for Confluence - Pro by Atlas Authority

The goal of this case study is to show how the above solutions solve the problems of real customers.

Let's start!

It is a table of contents. Click on the needed subheading and switch between parts of the article.

Customer’s data

Our customer is a medium-sized software development company with two offices in different locations and five project teams working on the five different projects at different stages and timing.

Their development resources are not evenly allocated between the projects. There are several team members that join part of the projects depending on the workload and stage.

Team members involved in each project can be physically in different locations, which means they are not always available for quick personal communication.

Issues to Be Solved

  1. Export data from Jira to Tableau using Tableau Connector for Jira from Alpha Serve.
  2. Create all metrics and dashboards in Tableau.
  3. Embed reports and dashboards in the relevant templates in Confluence documents using Tableau for Confluence Pro from Atlas Authority.
  4. Embed per project reports on the projects home / high-level status pages. That way if the higher-level managers go to the project space in Confluence, they get quick data on it.

Ideas on How to Address Jira / Confluence Connection Issues

  1. Implementation of the common KPI practice to all projects.
  2. For team meetings and customer reports: create and implement Confluence templates for minutes of the meeting.
  3. Use renewable and actual Jira reports and dashboards for the common KPIs as part of the minutes of the meeting template. The idea is to open the template in Confluence and be able to easily update the KPIs and dashboards directly in the document.

Integrate Jira / Confluence Data with Tableau: Solutions We Offer

Conclusion

Native Jira + Confluence integration is awesome, however, not all data can be reflected in a proper way through it. If you are using BI tools to make business decisions even more insightful, you can use specific plugins to have access to big data collected and used by those tools at hand, right in your Jira data dashboards in Confluence.
In other words, you will be able to merge data from Jira in Tableau and then in Confluence, which will let you run your web development projects even more successfully.
